We hold screenings on the first Friday of the month for ages three through five (who are not eligible for Kindergarten) who may be at-risk for handicapping conditions or developmental delays in areas like: gross motor coordination, fine motor coordination, vision, hearing, language development and articulation, concepts and memory, or social/emotional development. An appointment will be necessary, so call the Federal Programs Office at (502) 457-4001. If my child must be absent, what should I do?

Regular attendance is so important to you child’s academic success. Absences disrupt schedules, require readjustment to class routines, and slow down learning. Students should be in school every day unless they are ill. It is very important that the school is notified by the parent or guardian as soon as possible if a student will be absent. If the school is not notified by 10:20 a.m., state law (AZ Revised Statutes 15-803) requires a call be made to verify the child’s absence. Message machines are available for you to call in your child’s absence at 456-9842. Please state the type of illness when you call.

A note from the parent explaining the type of absence is required when phone verification is unsuccessful. Homework may be requested after the third absence. Requests should be submitted before 11:00 a.m.

What if my child is tardy to school?

Being on time is important. If your student is late for class, he or she must report to the office before going to the classroom. Your student will be given a pass to take to the classroom teacher. If they have continuousl unexcused tardiness, you will be notified and it may be necessary for your child to make the time up during lunch, recess, passing period, or after school. Excessive tardies are a disruption and may result in an office referral.

If I need to take my child out of school early, what steps should I follow?

For the safety and protection of students, Tombstone Unified School District does not allow students to be taken from the school before our regular dismissal time without the parent first coming to the office and signing their student out. Your student will then be called from the classroom. Occasionally a student may sign out early on the basis of a note or telephone call from the parent, but only with the principal's approval. If the student returns before the end of the school day, he/she must be signed back in at the office.

Is there a dress code at Huachuca City Elementary?

We encourage students to take pride in their attire as it relates to the school setting. Students are expected to dress appropriately and in a way, which reflects personal, and school pride. Clothing should be neat, clean, modest and in good taste. Any apparel that the administration determines to be unacceptable in light of community standards is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, clothing that offends or disrupts the educational process. If you have specific questions, please contact the office. A few of the guidelines are:

  • Inappropriate clothing includes: halter tops, strapless tops, spaghetti straps, exposed undergarments, see-through clothing, shirts that bare the midriff, garments with plunging necklines and "muscle shirts" or basketball shirts without an accompanying T-shirt.
  • All straps on shirts must be at least one inch in width. Blouses and shirts must be long enough to reach the pants, shorts, or skirts so that the midriff does not show.
  • Extremely baggy or saggy pants/shorts are not allowed for safety and security reasons. Length of shorts and skirts needs to be in close proximity to mid-thigh.
  • Pajamas and slippers are prohibited, except on approved school spirit week activities. Shoes must be worn at all times.
  • Clothing, accessories and/or head coverings that identify or have been altered to identify with illegal organizations are prohibited.
  • Clothing that portrays racial statements, profane or inflammatory language, and/or sexual depiction/innuendo will not be permitted.
  • Accessories that can be used as weapons, such as chains, spiked jewelry, or hanging belts are not allowed.
  • Clothing that advertises or advocates the use of alcohol, illegal substances, sex, or tobacco, may not be worn.
  • Head coverings may not be worn in the classrooms. Head coverings may include but are not limited to caps, hats, beanies, and scarves (unless approved by the administration).

Does Huachuca City Elementary provide a school nurse?

Yes, we employ a registered nurse to take care of health problems that arise in the course of the school day. The Health Office is open during the regular school hours. Please advise the nurse and your child's teacher of any special health concerns that affect your child. The school nurse gives first aid only. She does not diagnose illness or prescribe treatment, but notes symptoms and notifies parents/guardians if the severity of the illness or injury warrants such action. Parents/Guardians should follow up with their family physician. Here are some Health Office Guidelines to help you.
